Peer Pressure Released

I think that I have come to the conclusion, more or less, that, for the most part (notice the F. Scott Fitzgeraldesque clarifications?), we simply cannot learn anything of great worth from our peers/friends. Sure, our friends may have admirable traits that may justify tolerating their vices and stupidities. And, yes, our friends can and occasionally will inspire us. However, given the vacuum of significance of modernity, if we want the wisdom of the ages, we have to (re)turn to those prophets, seers, writers, and saints of the ages. YES. By all means–love your friends, enjoy their company, and give thanks for them in your lives. Just do not think that they will give you more than our current age allows anyone to give.
